Health is Wealth

Health is wealth – a phrase we’ve all heard before, but what does it really mean?

Wealth can come in many formats and it varies depending on what a person holds dear the most. To us, prioritizing your health should be one of your top priorities because it directly affects your overall well-being and success in life.

When you’re young, you have time. You have health, but you have no money. When you’re middle-aged, you have money and you have health, but you have no time. When you’re old, you have money and you have time, but you have no health.
Eric Jorgenson, The Almanack of Naval Ravikant: A Guide to Wealth and Happiness

When you’re healthy, you have more energy and mental clarity to pursue your goals and passions. A healthy body and mind allow you to be more productive, focused, and efficient in everything you do. Many of us who prioritise our health tend to achieve our goals faster and with greater ease than those who neglect it.

“87% of the physically healthy also indicated they were mentally fit, while only 55% of the above said they were also financially fit.

Taking care of your health can save you a lot of money in the long run. In Singapore, healthcare costs can be high, and chronic illnesses such as diabetes and hypertension can be costly. By investing in your health now, you can prevent these health issues from arising and save money on medical bills and medication in the future.

So how can you prioritize your health? Here are simple practical tips:

  1. Mental load: planning is everything
Procrastinating, worrying and feeling overwhelmed can be a result of not being prepared for the tasks ahead of you.
Application: Combat that by using a task list or planner and writing down your to-do list. It can be in a timetable format or simply a checklist of what needs to be done. In this way, you’re able to think through your day visually and prioritise which tasks need to be completed first. This can reduce stress and bring about a sense of calm and control.
  2. Physical reset: prioritise your pillow
You’ve heard it said before, but we’ll say it again: sleep is important. With sufficient quality sleep, our minds react and process feelings with a more balanced response and it improves our health and immunity. There is less risk of developing depression and volatile mood swings in response to our daily interactions.
Application: Creating a consistent sleep routine as an adult is also important. It helps to trigger your body’s melatonin production more consistently which helps us fall asleep faster. You can start by introducing low light closer to bedtime.
  3. Gut: Savour
Having a healthy gut helps with immunity and removing waste and toxins in our body that may hinder our overall well-being. If we don’t pay attention to what we feed our bodies, we may struggle with chronic fatigue, inflammation and other illnesses.
Application: Slow down and remove all distractions while dining so you can be more intentional during your meal time. Pick out foods that are good for you like incorporating more vegetables and fruits into your diet.

By prioritizing your health, you’ll have more energy, and mental clarity, and be able to achieve your goals more efficiently. Investing in yourself through your health now can also save you a lot of money in the future. After all, you’re not able to enjoy your hard work without your good health. So start making small changes in your daily routine today to prioritize your health and well-being.
