Globally, Mental Health Awareness Month is observed in the month of May. It’s a period of raising awareness about the importance of prioritising mental health, encouraging people to seek help when needed to lessen the “treatment gap” and overall breaking the stigma against mental health issues.
In Singapore, one in seven adults has faced mental health challenges, with anxiety and depression being the most prevalent conditions, according to the 2016 National Mental Health Survey. To foster mental wellness and raise awareness, numerous organizations and initiatives have been launched, including the Institute of Mental Health (IMH), which has provided mental health services to the public for over 90 years. The National Council of Social Service (NCSS) has also initiated programs such as the Mental Health Resource Directory and the Singapore Mental Health Film Festival to promote mental wellness.
