International Women’s Day is held annually on March 8. It celebrates the different achievements of women socially, economically, culturally and politically. It acts as a reminder that there is still a lot more to be done for women’s equality in the world and encourages the world to be part of the ongoing conversation.

Getting To Happy celebrates 8 women and their stories this month.

Anju: My aunt was a highly awarded academic when she was widowed, she was forced to change career and make a success of her husband’s homegrown business in retail in order to survive. I owe everything I learnt in business to her!

IWD 2023’s theme is #EmbraceEquity, what does that mean to you?
Anju: To me, it means making sure ALL women are able to step up to the plate and avail opportunities to help their businesses bloom.

How does supporting or empowering women in your life look for you?
Anju: My days are one big femme-fest!! I support women in our online community groups by connecting them with others and offering them a virtual port in their storm. I promote women-run small businesses wherever possible and am always looking for new ways to harness the energy in our network for everyone’s benefit! There are so many ways I interact with women – too many to count!

Prerna: Definitely my mother as she’s inspired me in so many ways. She’s a driving force of a daughter and has truly been the glue for our extended family as we moved all around the world, she’s a fantastic role model in how she’s built multiple career paths for herself – no matter her circumstances, she’s the greatest wife any man can ask for and my father is a very lucky man to have her, and she’s an amazing mother who consistently went out of her way to be there for her children (and now that I’m a mother I truly appreciate all her sacrifices).

IWD 2023’s theme is #EmbraceEquity, what does that mean to you?
Prerna: To me, equity is different from equality in that it forces us to recognize that different people have different requirements – and we must embrace our differences while driving acceptance for everyone.

How does supporting or empowering women in your life look for you?
Prerna: Not differentiating between any gender is the biggest one for me. Whether at work, at home or at play: creating equal and ample opportunities, enabling safe spaces for sharing and encouraging inclusion for everyone is what I call empowerment.
