International Women’s Day is held annually on March 8. It celebrates the different achievements of women socially, economically, culturally and politically. It acts as a reminder that there is still a lot more to be done for women’s equality in the world and encourages the world to be part of the ongoing conversation.
Getting To Happy celebrates 8 women and their stories this month.

Share a time a woman has inspired you in an area of your life and how/why that impacted you.
Anabel: My best friend, Sara is an unbelievably opinionated, confident person. But she is also one of those with the biggest hearts ever, and since the time I met her as an awkward 17-year-old, she has taught me the true meaning of being inclusive. It embarrasses me to say this, but growing up in a typical Singaporean-Chinese family, going to schools with people who looked just like me, and mixing with people who looked just like me meant that my social circles didn’t extend much further than that. Then, I was happy with the status quo but she wasn’t and challenged me! She has inspired me to step out of my shell and make a change. She is also someone I know, who, in a room full of opportunities, would mention my name. She is loyal like that, and I really admire that!
IWD 2023’s theme is #EmbraceEquity, what does that mean to you?
Anabel: It means that there isn’t a “one size fits all” solution. We all have different narratives and circumstances, and therefore we need to embrace that diversity by coming up with solutions that are inclusive to as many different groups of people as possible.
How does supporting or empowering women in your life look for you?
Anabel: I want to let my actions speak louder than my words and actually avoid well-meaning phrases like “Let me know how I can support you”, or “I’m here if you need help”. I want to support the women in my life by proactively showing up for them and being present. Over the years, I’ve gained skills that allow me to be confident of who I am, assertiveness, be able to advocate for myself and this is something I want to impart and empower other women to do the same

Renu: This isn’t time specific for me -This woman is my mother. Who tirelessly supports every decision of mine whether she agrees with it or not lol 🙂 we lost our dad when she was only 50 and she has brought up her 3 kids on her own with grace and dignity.
IWD 2023’s theme is #EmbraceEquity, what does that mean to you?
Renu: This is such an incredible movement. Giving equal opportunities to each and every person no matter which walk of life they come from or place. We are one and equal. This is an amazing way to bring women together across borders.
How does supporting or empowering women in your life look for you?
Renu: Emotional support for me is the greatest. Once we women feel confident and loved the world is our oyster. Just love with all your heart.
