International Women’s Day is held annually on March 8. It celebrates the different achievements of women socially, economically, culturally and politically. It acts as a reminder that there is still a lot more to be done for women’s equality in the world and encourages the world to be part of the ongoing conversation.
Getting To Happy celebrates 8 women and their stories this month.

Share a time a woman has inspired you in an area of your life and how/why that impacted you.
Amanda: At the risk of sounding corny, my mom has always been my biggest inspiration. My mom is one of those women who is effortlessly beautiful, stylish, and loved by everyone, but is completely down-to-earth about it and would never believe you if you told her. She stayed at home when my brother and I were little and went back to work once we were in school, and in both versions of herself, she was creative, ambitious, organised, and caring. Most of all, my mom took all of my dreams seriously (and I had some outlandish ones – I wanted to be an Olympian and an MTV VJ) and taught me to pursue them relentlessly, which I’ve always tried to do.
IWD 2023’s theme is #EmbraceEquity, what does that mean to you?
Amanda: I love the term “embrace” because it is gentle; it is welcoming; it’s like a nice warm hug. So often women are seen as “fighting” or “rebelling” for our rights when in reality, much of the true work around equity starts with loving, open minds and hearts.
How does supporting or empowering women in your life look for you?
Amanda: I empower women by equipping them with the tools and support they need to truly understand their own bodies, how they work, and how they can function best long-term through fitness and nutrition. I teach women how to strength train, bear their own body weight, fuel their active lifestyles, and repair broken relationships with food so they can break the cycle of dieting and restriction. Finally, I provide women with a safe space to experience intense physical transitions, such as pregnancy, postpartum, and menopause, with the knowledge that they will come out the “other side” feeling healthy and well.

Natalyn: Michelle Obama. She is the essence of poise, style, intelligence, and grit. That makes a formidable mixture that can actually drive the outcomes I want: a healthy and meaningful life.
IWD 2023’s theme is #EmbraceEquity, what does that mean to you?
Natalyn: It means recognizing that everyone’s starting line is a little different and catering for and celebrating those differences. It also means encouraging every woman to know their worth and to be bold in asking for what they deserve and not settle for anything less.
How does supporting or empowering women in your life look for you?
Natalyn: We must celebrate the big wins, the little wins, and all the in-between wins, both for ourselves and for our tribe. Talking about our achievements is sometimes stigmatized and some women find it incredibly difficult and uncomfortable to accept any credit or compliments. When a woman is completely unapologetic about celebrating a win, it will empower other women to do the same and get comfortable with celebrating themselves.
