A Tribute to Our Mothers

May Blog: Happy Mother's Day

As a parent, I constantly assess and appraise the quality of my children’s’ life – am I giving them the best food, giving them great learning opportunities outside of school or am I doing a good job keeping them engaged? It’s easy to lose sight of our own well-being amidst the endless demands of wanting the best for our children.

Yet, as the primary nurturers in our children’s lives, we must also nurture ourselves to ensure that our cups remain full. Most times, the love and support that comes from mothers are all the kids need.

Self-care looks different for every mother, but it encompasses activities that nourish our body, mind, and soul. Whatever form it takes, self-care is a powerful act of self-love that honors our worth as individuals and mothers. Here are some ways, I do self-care:

May Blog 2024 Mother's Day cards

  1. Make time for yourself
Prioritizing self-care allows mothers to recharge and better cope with the demands of parenting. Set aside even just a few minutes each day to do things for yourself such as reading a book, taking a relaxing bath, or enjoying a cup of tea. Even better if you can do it in a space of your own, away from the kids for a little while and just be yourself.
  2. Cuddles
Embrace the power of physical touch by snuggling with your child. Cuddling releases oxytocin, a hormone associated with bonding and reducing stress levels. Regular affectionate contact promotes emotional connection, nurtures attachment, and fosters a sense of security for both mother and child.
  3. Exercise
While carrying your toddler could be considered weight training; chasing after them cardio, carving out some time for regular exercise creates a routine for yourself. Exercise promotes better sleep, increases energy levels, and empowering mothers to navigate the challenges of motherhood with resilience and vitality.

As mothers, we must remember that we cannot pour from an empty cup. By prioritizing our own well-being, we demonstrate to our children the importance of self-love and self-respect. We teach them that it’s okay to prioritize their own needs and set boundaries in their relationships.

This Mother’s Day, let’s commit to nurturing ourselves as fiercely as we nurture our children. Let’s embrace self-care as an essential component of motherhood, recognizing that by caring for ourselves, we ultimately become better mothers to our children.

Remember, dear mothers, you are worthy of love, care, and nourishment—take the time to replenish your cup, for both yourself and your children!
